Kigali Activities
- Century Cinema - Rwanda's first movie theater. We love it! It is downtown in the new Kigali City Tower (KCT).
- Kigali Public Library - across the street from the US embassy. It has a cafe on the top level with nice smoothies and other foods. I am anxious to go check the library out, I hear good things about it. Looks like they are beginning to have some programs for kids as well. http://www.rls.gov.rw/

- Impano Art Center - opened by two guys from Ivuka Arts. Open 9am-5pm. Active studio for 10 artists, gallery of art, Nziza Artworks store, Art with a Mission gallery by orphans, Impano Dance troupe of Rwandan youth. - Yego Arts Center - across from MTN Centre
- Learn Traditional Rwandan Dance - for ex-pats over 16 yrs old- at Impano Art Center. Wednesdays 5-6pm, 5000 rwf per class.
- Museum of Natural History at the Kandt House here in Kigali...it is a museum about the animals & geologic formations of Rwanda. It is in town just past the prison (second turn on the downtown roundabout). http://www.museum.gov.rw/our-museums/natural-history.html

- Pottery in Kigali - It is on the back road from KICS to town where all the potters are. It is called the Dancing Pots, off the road and in between the other two main potters. I went ahead of time and arranged for three lessons in a week and then I came back the next week for the lessons. I believe we paid 5000 RWF a session and that included 7 pots that she made and one that Anna made. - Jennifer

- Goethe Institute - They tend to have shows from time to time. - Thomasine
- La Pallisse was really fun for swimming! It's 2,000 for adults, 1,000 for children. They have a little playground and the kiddie pool even has a slide, and the big pool has a diving board. They serve food. We spent a Saturday there recently. Fun, and pretty affordable. This is on your way to the airport, take a left at the road that goes to Akagera. It's on the left as you drive down that road. - Genny.
- Movie night at the US embassy. They hold these every month or 6 weeks or so, and if the weather is good they'll set up a big screen outdoors and you can bring blankets to sit on, or sit on their seating/benches. It's a real treat to watch a movie under the stars, and lately they've been showing lots of kid films and starting them nice and early (6pm), so we've been taking Mateo. The movie is free, and the marines have a bar where you can buy drinks and all you can eat popcorn. Fun! Look for these in Kigali Life and the embassy folks keep an email list that you can get on to be notified of events. - Genny.
- Morning/evening walks. I do a morning walk route through our neighborhood to get some fresh air and a bit of exercise. 5:45-6am is best time to go for cool air and before the whole neighborhood wakes up. Weekend evenings we sometimes stroll through our neighborhood as a family. - Genny
- Dinner parties/brunches/BBQ's/play dates - this season of life we're spending more time at home than going out, and enjoy hosting people for meals, and having families with little kids around. - Genny
- Coffeeshops. We enjoy getting coffee/pastries at Bourbon, Magda Cafe (in Kacyiru), A Thousand Cups of Coffee (near Kissimenti), and Aromas (near Kimironko). - Genny
- Kimironko Market. Some people find the market overwhelming, but I really enjoy it. Don't know how often I'll make it there with 2 little kids, but I was going every couple of weeks with just Mateo in the backpack carrier. I go for souvenirs (cheapest place to get stuff), fabric (for making clothes, household items), and produce. Our house lady buys most of our produce in our neighborhood, but for some items (broccoli, mangoes, cilantro, basil, etc.) I need to go to the market. There's also a tiny whole in the wall Amata Meza (milk shop) that I stop in, to escape the hustle and bustle of the market and regroup. It's across from the egg vendor. I usually get a sweet tea there for 100 RWF and a samosa or beignet. I also used to frequent another Amata Meza in our neighborhood. Lots of local flavor :). - Genny
- Downtown: shopping in town is actually a family activity for us, at Nakumatt, Simba, La Galette, etc. Also in town we enjoy fabric shopping (there's a street in town with a bunch of vendors). - Genny.
- J. Lynn's (formerly African Bagel Co-op) - Donuts and coffee at the bagel shop on Saturday mornings. Also, open on weekdays for regular items. Great place to meet people and stock up on bagels, tortillas, chips, salsa, peanut butter, bbq sauce, etc.

- Rwanda Unique Nursery - Kristen and I would love to take you to see this lovely garden!
- Juru Park – atop Mt. Kigali, fun weekend place to picnic or get lunch especially with a group, but take things to play, it’s a long wait for your food. - My kids love this place because they explore around and find bullet shells from the war years ago. They have a small playground with a slide and swings.
- Swimming at hotels: Manor Hotel, Lemigo Hotel. Or other places: Nyarutarama Sports Club, La Palisse or Mambo Club. Umabano/Laico/Novotel hotel- it's expensive for one-time use (4500 RWF), but if you're going to do it often you can buy a membership or we've heard there are some places with cheaper pools.
- Nyarutarama Sports Club - tennis courts with lessons available (5000 per hour, 1000 ball boy), pool with diving board, baby pool and slide, cheap brochettes & chips, swing set, aerobics, weight room. Memberships available.
- Mambo Club - swimming, bowling alley, foos, trampoline, swing set, sand volleyball. - very fun place! And they serve some food & drinks. I've heard small pizzas.
- La Palisse - hotel, large grounds, swimming, basketball court, large playground for kids, I saw go-karts in the corner, but not sure it they work. Take the left turn just before the airport.
- Nyarutarama Reservoir: Take a walk around the reservoir in Nyarutarama - we did this and it's not so exciting and several sketchy people lingering around.
- Kigali Golf Course - Lane has played a few times and the kids have gone with him to hit balls at the driving range and putting area. I think it has a small cafe with drinks.
- Play in the park in the Kimihurura roundabout. - we went and took a picnic lunch. Kind of hysterical with all of the ants in the rotundas, but fun for the kids to run around.
- Mama Africa in Kimihurura has a playground for kids!!!! They have a TON of stuff... literally. I was in shock to see it... so much color and fun! Between 1500 and 2000 rwf per child to play. Worth it for sure! I was so excited I took pictures! The man even let us stay and play for a bit! - Onawa. Update: closed due to fire.

- City Arts (Ballet Rwanda) - ballet, photography, yoga, hip hip and other classes for children and adults. www.cityartskigali.com
Kigali Restaurants
- Eating out: is a big treat. But - some places we enjoy for date nights: New Cactus, Khana Khazana, Zaffron, Shokola Lite, Sole Luna, Papyrus, Hot Racks, Zen, etc. For cheaper lunchtime eats: Aromas Cafe or Magda, or Rwandan lunch buffet at Afrika Bite. We go to Caisse Sociale in our neighborhood which has a good buffet for 1200 rwf. - Genny.
- New Fiesta - this is a branch of German butchery at Kissimenti. There's a little cafe next door that serves good food (nice spot for lunch) at good prices, and they promise the food will be ready in 15 min. Fresh squeezed juices, best cheeseburger I've had in Kigali, ribs, etc. The guy who owns it spent some time in Texas, so he knows how to make American style food. Much better food than Bourbon :). - Genny.
- Republika - Lane took me here on a date and it was great! Nice ambiance and food as well. Gift store had some nice things too. Definitely want to go back.

Kigali Events
- The Expo it's a trade show that attracts vendors from all over East Africa. It reminded me of a big state fair, African style, sans animals. It was fun. - Genny
- International Food Festival. It is held at an ambassador's residence. It was an amazing food festival with booths of food from around the world. Entry was 6000 RWF and well worth it.
- Kigali Marathon - in May
Nyanza - (90 min drive from Kigali) day trip

- National Art Gallery - located in the Nyanza District about 85 km from Kigali. http://www.museum.gov.rw/our-museums/art-museum.html - very small, I hear.
- Gatagara Pottery - There, you can buy some nice Rwandan pottery. They have a better selection than anywhere in Kigali. We also had some great goat brochettes nearby for lunch.)
- Some of the genocide memorial sites (Nyutarama and Nyamata are close by; not always an uplifting afternoon with the kids - but interesting and moving).
- Huye Tin Shop - about 45 minutes past Nyanza is Butare. There is a small but neat tin shop which makes amazing tin (silver looking) animals, platters, candlesticks, etc. You can see some of the products at the Umubano hotel in Kigali gift shop to get an idea of what they have. The prices at the hotel are triple those at the Huye shop. www.rwanda-tin.com
- Akagera Game Park Lodge - My all time favorite. The family room is reasonable for $120 USD per night which includes breakfast. The family room is two adjoining rooms, one with a king and the other room with 2 twin beds. There is a nice pool and an amazing view of the lake. It's quiet and peaceful and they even have a play ground for kids! My kids love taking a game drive as well, but it's worth going even if you skip the game drive. The food is expensive so we like to bring snacks and stuff to make a lunch vs buying all our meals there. - Michelle.
- Ruzizi Tented Camp (inside Akagera National Park) - 0782166015. akagera@african-parks.org; www.african-parks.org; Looks awesome! Luxury tented camp.
- Animal Game Drive - 0782166015. we drove our own car and paid 4000 RWF for the car entrance fee. Cost was 12,000 RWF for adult residents, 9000 for kids age 6-12, and free for under 5 yrs old. Arrive early about 6am to get a park ranger guide to ride in your car with you. The long-drive is 6 hours to the north end of the park and is supposed to be a better view of more animals. The short-drive is 2-3 hours in the south end of the park and allows you to see some animals. We did the short drive since we had our kids with us. It was nice, but we were bummed we didn't get a park ranger even though we arrived at 6:30am. Not sure if we should have fussed more. The park ranger would have known exactly where to go to see certain animals, instead of us just adventuring around on our own. We saw impala, warthog, zebra, gazelle, topi, baboons, and several different birds on our own but we never found the buffaloes. We heard the elephants and giraffes had all migrated to the northern part of the park due to the dry season. And I hear most everyone goes to the north-end of the park to see the best animals.
- Next time, we want to do a Boat Game Drive to see the many hippos and crocodiles in the lake. - Anna
- Moriah Hill in Kibuye - That was the place I was going to suggest! It's close by and nice. Kibuye for the day to swim at Moriah Hill - Jessica. Kayaking, swimming, hiking.
- Boat ride to Napoleon's Hat Island - to see the bats, lunch at Amahoro Island to eat brochettes and chips. Boat driver - Cassim: 0783107227. Cost: 45,000 rwf for 4 hours
- Bethany Hotel - has many affordable rooms with a lake view.
- Cormorant - looks awesome and heard of several people loving it.
Gisenyi - on Lake Kivu (3 hrs from Kigali)
- Kigufi Catholic Guesthouse (Maison St. Benoit Kigufi) - 0788409867/0788620175 (French & Kinyarwanda, no English). Double + single bed = 15,000 rwf (We got two rooms and had plenty of space). Breakfast = 1,000. Lunch = 2,000. Dinner = 3,000. Lovely property with grassy space and benches overlooking the water. Rocky shoreline with peaceful sounds of waves crashing against the shore. Small sandy area for kids to play. Rooms are very basic with no decorations, just beds, nets, a desk, a towel and soap. There are private bathrooms are attached to the rooms but they had to bring us a bucket of hot water upon request to ladle and bath in the showers/bathtub. We brought a jug of water, some towels and pillows for the adults. The breakfast was simple (bread, tea, coffee, fruit, cheese/eggs) but very peaceful to sit listen to the waves and let the kids explore. We brought a jar of peanut butter for breakfast which I am glad we did. There is a chapel on the property. Our rooms were down the hall from the dining area, but they have other rooms in the buildings around the property, I wish we could have been in one of those rooms in hindsight.
Directions: Drive to Gisenyi and then follow the signs to the big Bralirwa factory. Go through the factory gates and follow the dirt road beyond the factory for about 10 minutes. Kigufi is on your right.
My favorite place in Gisenyi is called Kigufi. It is VERY basic (no hot water coming out of the wall, only delivered to you by bucket upon request). It is a Catholic guest house and has beautiful grounds, a chapel and tons of neat animals (cows, rabbits, etc). (Kigufi is run by nuns). There is no "beach" but it is easy to swim from the boat area. What some people do is stay there (because it is SUPER cheap and then go to the Serena hotel for the day and use the beach and the pool. - Jessica.
There is a catholic guest house in Gisenyi called Kigufi – it is cheaper than Paradise Malahide, and has beautiful gardens and is right on the lake. It is clean, but rustic, sometimes no hot water and the food is African in style but tasty. We stay there a lot. 0788409867 – you want to speak to Sister François, she speaks some English, but mostly Kinyarwanda and French so you may need a translator. - Nancy - Kivu Serena Hotel (formerly Kivu Sun) in Gisenyi. You can tell them you're a resident and keep harassing them and you should get a lower price. The rooms are air conditioned, the showers are out of this world, there's tv, a pool, AND a nice sandy beach. Our kids just went back and forth between the beach and the pool and playing in the sand. There's a great (super expensive) buffet at night, but you can also order off the menu (even during the buffet), so we found ways to cut food costs. They have several menus so keep asking. (Like, there's a pizza menu that we didn't see until the last day). And there's a marvelous breakfast buffet that's included with your room. Well worth the cost for a nice break for the family. - Kristin R.

Great breakfast included. Restaurant available for lunch and dinner. Large beach area with lots of umbrellas and lounge chairs. Pool with kiddie pool and more chairs & umbrellas on the deck. Towels provided for beach and pool. Servers available to take orders from the pool & beach areas. Grassy space with trampoline, carousel, hammock. Kayaks, sailboat, and jet skis available for rent by the hour. Bathrooms and showers are available by the pool.
Day fee to use the pool/beach is 5,000 rwf for adults and 3,000 rwf for children. - Very worth it!! - View Palm Resort (formerly Palm Garden) - 0789528772/ 0789746504. viewpalmresort@gmail.com; www.yvke-beach-resort.com. Philip Manager. They have 9 rooms available. Three have African decorations, very cool private outdoor bathroom & shower. The other six are "Modern" with typical tile floors and bathrooms. They can add beds to the rooms as needed. Double bed (2 people) = $80. Double bed + single bed (3 people) = $95. Double bed + 2 single beds (4-5 people, if parents on singles and kids all on big bed) = $110. Breakfast included. Restaurant available onsite for lunch and dinner. Lakefront property with small sandy beach & umbrella area. Resort owns a boat for boat rides, but I didn't ask prices. Large grassy space for kids to run and play. Neat restaurant on the property. Beautiful grounds!!
*Update - we had some theft issues, so don't bring tons of nice electronics. keep your windows and outdoor bathroom door locked when you leave your room.

Vedeste, manager (He used to work at View Palm, but had a falling out with them, but he had rights to the name Palm Garden, so he took the name and started a new hotel just down the road. He still uses the old Palm Garden email and tells people to switch to the new property, tricky.)
Not on the waterfront, but located across the street on the hillside a few properties past View Palm. Lovely view of the lake from higher up on this property. About 6 rooms on the first level overlooking the lake and 2 large apartments on the upper level. The apartments are nice with a kitchen to cook, living room with big screen tv, and plenty of room to add beds as needed.
Double bed (2 people) = $75. Double + single = $90. Double + 2 single (very tight squeeze in lower rooms = $105. Ask for group rate and discount for multiple nights.
I think there is a restaurant as well for meals, but I forgot to look. - Guest Houses - We have also enjoyed staying at guests houses in Gisenyi and then spending the day on the beach at the Kivu Serena. If you buy something to drink or eat, you can spend the day on their beach for free. That area is also nice for biking. - Barbara
- Gisenyi Restaurant - The Bistro on White Rock. Just a few minutes down the shore from the Serena Hotel and overlooks the water. The food was excellent. I had talapia fish with a lemon butter sauce and sauteed potatoes that were some of the best I've had. It was kinda pricey but much better than I expected.
Ruhengeri (Musanze) (2 hrs from Kigali) (on the way to Gisenyi)
- Volcana Lounge - fantastic pizza place!!! It is on the main road, on the left side just past the turn towards Kinigi. My kids think this is a best pizza in Rwanda. It is a great stopping point on your way to Gisenyi. You can watch your pizza being cooked in a wood-fired oven outside and look out to two of the volcanoes. A very popular spot in Musanze.
- Alberto's Italian Restaurant - Alberto 0788448943. Located off the main street. An Italian guy who speaks great English. He can make gluten-free options. Call ahead to make a reservation and get exact directions.
- Fatima Guesthouse (Centre Pastoral Notre Dame de Fatima) - Simple, clean rooms. 0788324033/0252546780. cpndefatima@yahoo.fr. Double room 20,000 rwf, triple 30,000 rwf with a nice breakfast included.

- Gorillas - this is the town to begin all of the gorilla trekking at the base of the volcanoes.

- La Paillotte Gorilla Campground - a few minutes past the Kinigi town at the base of the Sabinyo volcano. Beautiful views of the volcano. Cooler weather, lovely trees. Tents, beds, sheets are already provided. They will even make a campfire for you. They have a double room attached to the main building, a few traditional huts which are really cool to stay in, and Coleman type tents with cots, mattresses. There is a small playground for kids also. You should definitely call ahead to request any meals you desire and even verify the day of your arrival. Lane went with some guys and they had a great time. Directions: From Musanze, go to Kinigi town, follow the signs to the Sabinyo Silverback Govenor's Camp, then go past the Govenor's Camp a few minutes and you will see the La Paillotte campground.

- near Ruhengeri. It is COLD up there and it is right across the street from the ORTPN office where all the gorilla treks set off from. There's not a lot for you to do except let the kids run around. - Mountain Gorilla View Resort - we stayed here after we went gorilla trekking. It was very peaceful. It is cooler up in the mountains, so I loved wearing a fleece jacket, sitting by our own personal fireplace in our room and reading a book and sipping hot tea. They have traditional dancers each evening, and I thought they were very good. There are several chairs on the lawn to sit, relax and watch the cloud formations around the volcano and the hydrangea flowers on the grounds are beautiful. It is a bit pricey at $300 usd for a double room for two people, but all meals are included in that price and we were able to get the resident discount of 10% off of that price.
- Golden Monkeys - We recently went to see the Golden Monkeys. It was GREAT fun!! It was about $65 for each of us (as residents). I think you need to be 15 years old to do this. - Barbara.
- Virunga Lodge - about 30 min from Musanze (but not in Kinigi). AMAZING! This place is up on a hill by itself overlooking the volcanoes and two lakes below. The 360 degree view is spectacular. The rooms are $200 per person per night including all meals and a complimentary massage. However, you can go just for Lunch at $25 per person. We went just for tea and sodas on the porch one afternoon after staying the night in Musanze. Just going for lunch or tea would be totally worth it, to sit on the porch and look out on the view. Kinihira - 90 min from Kigali
- Sorwathe Tea Plantation Guest House - It’s basic but good, very beautiful and restful and they cook breakfast for you and will do dinner as well by request. There is a tennis court and ping pong table and lovely walks to take. Only 90 minutes away, up high in the hills it is cool and the views are lovely. Accomodation is simple, modern, clean apartments and they cook dinner and breakfast for you and serve it in your apartment if you request. Tennis, ping pong, pitch n putt golf and fireplaces.- Kerry., Badminton, Darts, Tea Plantation and Factory Tours, Interesting Hikes and Bird Watching. Phone -0252578516. Office in Kigali at 1st floor Someca Building (in front of BCR bank downtown).
Lake Muhazi - about 1 hour east of Kigali
- Lake Muhazi Beach Hotel - Lane just went on a staff retreat for work and said we should definitely go back as a family and with some other families. This hotel is directly on the lake with great views. It has a playground for kids and several family cabins. The family cabins are 60,000 rwf + taxes per night. This includes breakfast. Inside the family cabins are 2 rooms, one with a queen and one with a double, but they said they can put an extra single bed in one of the rooms.
Gitarama
- Jangwe Lodge - Stay at a Belgium family's home with a pool with great food. A friend of ours would go here for personal retreats a few times a year. For two people it is about 50,000 rwf including breakfast. Lunch and dinner can also be added. I have heard great things about this place. Georges Kamanayo 0730155692. georges.kamanayo@gmail.com.
- Weekend trip to Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda. You have to pay $50 each for a visa, but it's a quick 2 hour drive to the border, then about 1 hour more to get to the lake.
- Bushara Island Resort - We stayed here and recommend it. You park your car in a secure lot by the lake, then take a motorized canoe with your baggage to get to the island where there is swimming (the lake is cold, however!), boating, a little hiking loop, and a restaurant that serves decent food and cold drinks. They had a lot of crayfish dishes on the menu, fresh from the lake. At night, there are some cottages you can rent, or we stayed in a "safari tent" which was a lot of fun for a couple of nights. They are constructed on little private plots with a beautiful lake view. The toilet is a latrine behind the tent (clean), and the shower is outdoors. The staff bring warm water that they rig up in a big pot for the shower. Rustic, but fun - if you guys like 4 star camping style activities. This was one of our favorite long weekend trips here. Would be very fun with kids. - Genny.
- Birdnest at Bunyoni Resort - +256-779229870/+256758402585. www.birdnestatbunyoni.com. I loved this place! They had nice big rooms with 2 queen sized beds, balcony, nice big showers. On the lake with great view, nice restaurant, fires on the deck in the evenings, wifi, chilly pool, carved wooden canoes to use on lake, very refreshing for quiet retreat. Would love to go back!
